An Ounce of Preventive Dental Care

As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” And nothing could be truer when it comes to your dental health. You and your family can avoid the need for complex and costly dental services by taking advantage of the preventive services covered by the TRICARE Dental Program (TDP).

Why is Preventive Dental Care Important?
Your teeth should last a lifetime! Proper brushing, a healthy diet and regular visits to your dentist can help you enjoy a lifetime of good dental health - one that is free of tooth decay and other serious dental problems.

Good preventive dental care is also important for your general health. A healthy mouth with well-cared-for teeth enables you to chew properly, speak clearly and smile confidently. By caring for your natural teeth you are contributing to your general well-being and enjoyment of life.

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends the following for good oral health )

  • Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss your teeth daily.
  • Eat nutritious meals and snacks.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and exams.
  • Talk to your dentist about fluoride treatments and dental sealants.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three to four months (or sooner, if the bristles become worn).

What is Covered?
Diagnostic and preventive services such as exams, cleanings and X-rays are covered at 100 percent of United Concordia's allowance. If you or your family members receive these services from a United Concordia participating dentist, you will incur no out-of-pocket expenses.

The TDP covers three exams (only two from the same dental office) and two cleanings in any consecutive 12-month period. For example : If you receive a cleaning on May 13, 2006, and another on November 10, 2006, you would be eligible for your next cleaning on May 1, 2007.

One set of bitewing X-rays (consisting of up to four bitewing X-rays per visit) is also covered during a consecutive 12-month period. A second set may be approved if it is needed as the result of a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) relocation.

The TDP also covers two topical fluoride applications in a consecutive 12-month period, and sealants on permanent molars are covered at 80 percent through age 18.
