United Concordia Volunteers for PA National Guard Homecoming
On September 10, 2006, the state honored Pennsylvania
National Guard troops with a tailgate party, ceremony
and a free concert featuring the Beach Boys. The
tribute, known as “Operation Salute,”
was organized at the Pennsylvania State University's
Bryce Jordan Center as a way to give thanks to the
troops, especially for their service in Iraq since
the 2001 terrorist attacks and in Louisiana after
Katrina.
More than 16,000 Pennsylvania National Guard members
have been deployed in the war on terrorism since
the Sept. 11 attacks. Twenty-five have been killed
in action, nine have died on duty under non-hostile
conditions and 287 have been wounded, the state said.
Gov. Ed Rendell honored those who have given their
lives during the war in the Middle East as the
audience gave a standing ovation to the families
of the deceased.
“These guardsmen have put their lives at risk to serve
their country,” said Amy Schade, Financial Reporting
specialist. “This event gave us the opportunity to
say thank you for their courage and their sacrifices.
We were able to show Pennsylvania National Guard
members how important they are to the citizens of
Pennsylvania and that their bravery during a time of
uncertainty has not gone unnoticed and will not be
forgotten.”
The day was marked with displays of gratitude for the
troops. Over 1,100 volunteers, including 22 United
Concordia volunteers, wore shirts that read “Thank
You” on the front and “Serving Those Who Serve U” on
the back. Volunteers had tasks ranging anywhere from
checking tickets, to guest relations. United Concordia's
volunteers proudly served food to some of the 20,000
service men and women and their families.
